AUTUMN DEEPENS
mushrooms—
I ponder the virtue
of thyme or sage
a 2-for-1 deal
on canned pumpkin
glint of light
the sound of steel
on the honing stone
breathing
before the guests arrive
red wine
cooking steam
drips from the window sill
new food stains
on an old cookbook
autumn deepens

LETTER FROM HOME
the sound of the TV
bleeds into the kitchen clatter
summer dusk
among the crickets’ chirp
cheek against soft earth
raccoons splashing
in the evening garden
star jasmine
after midnight
a fumbling of keys by the front door
Felini-esque
silent passage past my window
the moonlit ship
first light through trees
footsteps in the hall
